  1. Setting Up Caddy

Now that DNS is set up, I needed a web server to run as a proxy. This allows us to use domain names with standard web ports (80 & 443) instead of all the unique 4 digit ports we'll eventually have everywhere. This is basically an extension to the convenience we started by setting up a DNS server.

  2. Setting Up DNS

The first service I needed to get up and running was a DNS server. Now, it's not strictly necessary, but I wanted to be able to give family and guests domains to reach our services instead of IP addresses. A simple quality of life improvement. This is how I set it up.

  3. MicroOS Home Server

Last Summer I moved to the Twin Cities for work. It was a big move all the way from northern Indiana. Despite the semi-trunk full of things we brought with us, we were still kind of starting from scratch. We got a new house in a new neighborhood with new neighbors and stores and groups to join. With the new house, I took this opportunity to rethink my tech.

  4. On Romantic Conflict

Romance stories are predictable. Many stories are, but romance especially. Popular romance runs on a number of tropes and trusted story beats. While this could make the books very predictable (and often, it does), I'm not focused on that aspect, and I feel confident that it's the same with women, the target demographic.

  5. On Month-long Challenges

I'm apparently not very good at setting up new habits. I am attemping the 100 Days to Offload in order to keep me writing. I'm going to make an attempt at NaNoWriMo (or its community replacement Writing Month). However, I've already tried Inktober on several occasions and never got past day 10.

  6. Things I Learned About Romances

Another genre I've been reading a bunch of are romance novels. I haven't read any of the big names (like Colleen Hoover), but what I've read so far is very much targeted towards women. Here's what I've learned.

  7. Things I Learned About Mysteries

I've been reaching out of my usual reading genres (a lot of science fiction and fantasy), and dipping into others. One of those genres is mystery. Here are some things I've learned about mystery novels.

  8. Mini-Rant: The Neighborhood Schools

One of our early Minnesota tasks after moving was getting our kids transferred to local schools. We don't do private schools, so we transferred them to the neighborhood public schools. Upon moving, we started meeting neighbors and asked them about the schools.

They told us "it's really... diverse".
